I usually don't layer my kicks (i should probably start though lol) I usually just find a really heavy kick to begin with, but I DO like to layer my drums, (like snare, snap, and clap mixing), it makes the drums come alive in a sense...

Dudes hit me up all the time with the same question, Marv, how you get your drums to hit like they do? I tell cats that I take my time to pick them. It might take up 2 to 3 hours just to pick one kit.The reason it take that long sometimes i.m.o., is because, I believe the drums are the central instrument in the song. I can have a fire melody but, if the drums aren't hittin, I trash it. Like u don't have to have alot of stuff going on in the song, they just gotta hit hard!My kickI always layer my kicks. I use this one particular kick all the time and layer it with another one. I do that to give punch to the other kick I'm using. I also make sure that the kicks are not phasing with one another by changing the pitched on one of them.Definition for phasing is: when two things are in phase the signal from each system is identical and the movements from each reinforce each other doubling the sound creating what is called an antinode (to be really technical) when two things are out of phase they produce the same signal but at different times causing what is called phase cancellation and the two sounds start to cancel each other giving a sound similar to what you would attribute to a phaser pedal or flanger. when two signals are completely out of phase (180 degrees) they create what is called a NODE, an area where the two signals start to cancel each other out and as a result you lose alot of sound (in non tecnical terms). My snareI pick my snare depending on the melody of the song. If I'm doing a 70's feel type track, I wouldn't use an 808 clap. I would probably use a east coast clap layering it with a big snare.Hats and CrashesI pick them according to the drums.Extra's (percussions)It depends on the mood of the track.

Now once you find the drums you love SAVED THEM, according to style of the drum they are south, east, west, pop, etc. There is nothing like finding some nice sounds and can't find them anymore. Take it from me, I've been there lol! Just a lil advice
